REPORT: Feminists4John at TUC Womens Conference

Feminist4John activists were campaigning at TUC Womens Conference in Scarborough. Delegates were given copies of the Womens Manifesto produced by the John4Leader campaign explaining Johns commitments to the "gender agenda". Loraine Monk from Feminists4John spoke at a Fringe Meeting on the future of the Labour Party after Blair called by the Labour Representation Committee, alongside Mary Turner, President of the GMB and member of Labour's NEC, and Katy Clark MP. Alice Mahon also addressed the meeting and called on women trade unionists to support John McDonnell in the forthcoming leadership election as the best way of ensuring their concerns were represented in the Party.

WOMEN RISE UP!

The Women's Manifesto, 'Women Rise Up!', has been drafted to begin a real discussion on how we address gender inequality. After consultation with women trade unionists, feminists, activists and various organisations, women in the campaign have developed an outline of a women's manifesto, with a number of key policy demands including:

Tackling women's poverty by challenging for equal pay and securing access to a decent pension for all women.

Improving childcare provision, maternity/paternity rights and financial support for home carers.

Repealing anti-trade union laws and introducing compulsory pay audits.

Ensuring a women's right to choose a free and safe abortion, maintaining the current time limit, and promoting women's health and enabling free access to IVF and safe childbirth.

Tackling violence against women, improving services and support for women who have suffered violence and rape.

Recognising formally the contribution women make to our economy in the wide variety of roles they play in our community.

Please join our work for John's campaign: reclaiming the Labour Party as a democratic voice for working people including the millions of women who are struggling in low paid jobs; the women who have been let down by insufficient welfare provision; the female trade unionists who have stood up for their rights; women who want a good education; women who have suffered unacceptable violence; women experiencing racism; women who believe in their right to control their own bodies.

If you would like to obtain a copy of the "Women's Manifesto" and participate in our campaign get in contact by email on info@john4leader.org.uk or by post at John4Leader Campaign PO Box 2378, London E5 9QU.

PINK BALLOONS and FLAMING TORCHES

On Saturday women were demonstrating and campaigning for better abortion provision; Abortion Rights launched the Campaign for a Modern Abortion Law and there was torchlight march in the evening (Feminist Fightback).

I attended both events, and was pleased to see that lots women were keen to get out and assert the principle of a woman’s right to choose. It was inspiring and empowering to stand shoulder to shoulder with activists making lots of noise and powerfully driving our message home.
The day of action was marked by pink balloons at lunchtime (the launch of the Campaign for a Modern Abortion Law), flaming torches, banners and angry chants in the evening.
The march was particularly atmospheric and vibrant, with between 200 -300 women, including the NUS Women’s officer, marching together in solidarity. Chants included;

‘Not the church, not the state, women must decided their fate’

‘Get your rosaries of my ovaries!’

‘2-3-4-5- we will never privatise
Publicly funded, publicly run
Free health care for everyone’

‘Hey! Hey! Mister! Mister!
Get your laws of my sister!’

As you can imagine, we caused a bit of a stir! At the end we listened to strong contributions from a number of speakers, including Katy Clarke MP.
I thought the whole day was a thoroughly positive experience and was pleased to see many members of SYN attending.
I hope to see lots more to come, as we keep moving forward with the campaign for a woman’s right to choose a free and safe abortion
